Clarkston -- Defending Michigan High School Athletic Association Class A giant slalom champion Hannah Wolf and the Clarkston girls ski team opened the local ski season with a dominating performance Jan. 10 at Pine Knob Ski Resort. The finished the dual meet scoring format event with a 9-0 record over Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, Lake Orion, Bloomfield Hills Andover, Bloomfield Hills Lahser, Rochester Adams, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood, Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day, Waterford, and Rochester.

Notre Dame Prep finished the meet with an 8-1 record, Lake Orion 7-3 and Andover 6-3. The Clarkston girls finished fourth in the state in Class A last season behind Traverse City West, Marquette, and Traverse City Central and fully expect to vie for the top prize this season.
"We have all of our returning starters back other than Trisha Peters. So we are just as deep as last year," said Clarkston Head Coach Mike Foyteck. "They've had a lot of preseason training and are looking real good this year."
In the boys races, state championship contender Waterford raced past the field to finish 9-0 on the day. Lake Orion was 8-1. Cranbrook Kingswood and Notre Dame Prep were both 6-2. Waterford finished a close third in Class A in the state last year behind Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice and Marquette. Waterford Head Coach Rick Schoonover feels his team will be in contention for the title again this season.
"Our goal is the championship," said Schoonover. "All of the top teams each lost two skiers to graduation. It could be a dogfight this year. But it is way too early to say. We have a very strong team and we're just trying to have a lot of fun." Individually, Wolf was first in the girls race with a combined time in the two heats of 33:54. Notre Dame Prep's Natasha Kosik was second in 33:76. Clarkston's Maddy Dunn was third and teammate Kelly Peters fourth. Prep's Katrina Stencel was fifth. Wolf won the Class A giant slalom title and was fourth in the state in the slalom last season. Clarkston placed five skiers in the top 11. Erica Halsey tied for sixth and Heather Brown finished in 11th. Notre Dame Prep also had a strong showing at the top of the leaderboard with Morganne Methius in eighth, Alexandra Kosik 12th, and Michelle Kolkmeyer in 13th. Waterford freshman Taylor Hunter (bib 165, shown below) won the boys race in 32:89 edging his older brother Carson's (bib 162, shown below) time of 32:97. Notre Dame Prep's Kyle Powers was third in 33:22. Waterford's Brett Nantau was fourth and Rochester's Steven Megahan was fifth. Waterford was dominate on the leaderboard taking five of the top 10 spots. Kevin Priestap was tied for sixth and Nick Schoonover was ninth.
