Orchard Lake St. Mary's Brian French races to victory at Alpine Valley on Jan. 31. White Lake -- Orchard Lake St. Mary's beat defending Michigan High School Athletic Association Class A State Champion Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice in the final dual meet of the season on Jan. 31 at Alpine Valley Ski Resort. The Eaglets finish the regular season undefeated at 9-0 and ends Brother Rice's three-year undefeated streak in dual meets. St. Mary's only dual meet loss last season was to Brother Rice. The meet was incredibly close and was decided by the fifth skier, with St. Mary's Eric Goeckel getting the win. The two teams will meet again Monday at the Catholic High School League championships and both should battle for the Class A state championship. St. Mary's Carl Goeckel was first in the slalom at 28.13 edging teammate Brian French's 28.47. French won the giant slalom in 30.30. Brother Rice's Zach Nowak was second in 30.76. In other boys races, Brother Rice beat Milford 12-28, St. Mary's beat Walled Lake Northern 12-24, and Walled Lake Northern beat Milford 17-19. On the girls side, Walled Lake Northern beat Milford (18-19) and Livonia Ladywood/Bloomfield Hills Academy of the Sacred Heart 16-22.
