MHSAA SKI REGIONALS

Holly -- The Clarkston girls team and the Waterford boys team dominated the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1, Region 2 Ski Championships at Mt. Holly on Feb. 14 to qualify for the state competition on Feb. 25. Clarkston won the slalom with 11 points and the giant slalom with 12 points to run away from the girls competition. Rochester Adams (125) and Lake Orion (143) also qualified for states, finishing second and third. The Wolves' Hannah Wolf won both events, winning the slalom in 57.19 and the giant slalom in 45.77.

Waterford won the slalom with 35 points and finished second in the giant slalom with 47 points to finish first in the boys competition with 82 points. Lake Orion (58.5) and defending MHSAA Division 1 State Champion Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice (59) were comfortably in second and third place after the slalom. Birmingham United and Grand Blanc both made it very close with strong performances in the giant slalom. Birmingham was fourth with 69 and Grand Blanc first with 36 points in the giant slalom. Lake Orion (53) slipped to fourth and Brother Rice (86) fifth in the event. But it their scores were enough for both the Dragons and Warriors to finish in second and third overall and qualify for states. Lake Orion finished with 111.5 points, Brother Rice 145, Birmingham 154.5 and Grand Blanc 157. Waterford's Carson Hunter was first in the slalom in 54.16. Steve Megahan from Rochester United was first in the giant slalom in 45.66.
The MHSAA Division 1 Ski Finals are Feb. 25 at Nub's Nob. The Division 2 Finals are the same day at Boyne Mountain.

DIVISION 1, REGION 3
Milford girls, South Lyon boys race to victory White Lake --The Milford girls and the South Lyon boys won the Region 3 championships at Alpine Valley on Feb. 14.
Milford finished in first in both the slalom (32) and giant slalom (34.5) to run away with the girls team event with 66.5 points. Brighton and Walled Lake Northern also qualified for state competition. Brighton was second with 100 points. Northern was third with 106 points.
South Lyon pulled off the biggest upset of state regional competition, winning the boys event with 97 points. Novi Detroit Catholic Central (125) and White Lake Lakeland (139) also qualified for state competition.
Undefeated Orchard Lake St. Mary's was expected to dominate the regional, but had two skiers suffer disqualifications in the slalom and finished a disappointing ninth with 126.5 points. The Eaglets came back to easily win the giant slalom with 36 points. Their 162.5 total was only good enough for fourth place.
In the boys individual races, St. Mary's Brian French won the giant slalom in 54.69. South Lyon's Jeffrey Thompson won the slalom in 40.68.
For the girls, Pinckney's Ashley Kitada won the giant slalom in 58.24. Milford's Emily Brown won the slalom in 45.93.

DIVISION 2, REGION 6
Notre Dame Prep girls, Cranbrook boys race to victory Cannonsburg -- The Pontiac Notre Dame Prep girls and the Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood boys won the Region 6 championships at Cannonsburg Ski Area on Feb. 14. Notre Dame Prep dominated the girls competition, winning both the slalom (15) and giant slalom (10) to finish with an incredible 25 points. Bloomfield Hills Andover (167.5) and Bloomfield Hills Lahser (177) also qualified for state competition. Cranbrook won both the boys slalom (46) and giant slalom (46) to finish with 92 points. Pontiac Notre Dame Prep (129) and Matawan (143) also qualified for state competition. Notre Dame Prep's Natasha Kosik won both the girls individual events. She finished with 1:01.08 in the slalom and 52.26 in the giant slalom. In the boys event, Notre Dame Prep's Kyle Powers was first in the slalom in 59.63. Kalamazoo Hackett/Parchment's Mason Shepard won the giant slalom in 50.39.
