Area senior players net one last chance

Nearly 200 show their skills in fron of college coaches at fourth annual foundation event

A couple of hundred  Metro Detroit senior boys basketball players got one final opportunity to impress college coaches Saturday at the Horatio Williams Foundation’s fourth annual Second Chance Basketball Games held at Detroit Renaissance High School.

The event was designed to highlight the skills of area seniors who have not yet received college scholarship offers in front of Division II, Division III, junior college, and community college coaches from around the state. Division I coaches cannot participate due to NCAA recruiting restrictions.

The majority of players participating came from Detroit high schools, but others came from as far as Flint, Port Huron, and Grand Blanc to play.

Nearly 200 boys played ins front of 27 college coaches during the event.

Senior girls will play next Saturday, April 17, at the Northwest Activity Center in Detroit beginning at noon. Girls can register by going to www.horatiowilliams.org.

"The idea was to give a kid an opportunity to play who might not have that opportunity," Williams told the Detroit News. "The key thing is to have college coaches have a look at these players. Maybe they hadn't seen them before. They get a chance to watch them compete and meet them, one on one."

Last year, 16 boys and six girls received college scholarships after the event.

Madison Heights Bishop Foley continued their hot start sweeping a baseball doubleheader Tuesday over Catholic High School League C-D Division foe Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, 6-3 and 12-2.

The Ventures improve to 9-3 on the young season. Jeff Schalk got the win in the opener, striking out seven. Daniel Zuchowski had a single, triple, home run and two RBI in game one. Zuchowski picked up the win on the mound in game two, striking out seven. Brad Schalk had a double and two RBI in the six-inning nightcap.

Bishop Foley looks to make a run at their first-ever CHSL C-D baseball title with only three seniors graduated from last year’s team.

Notre Dame Prep falls to 3-7 on the year.

Senior all-stater Kyla Cross scored all three goals for Foley. Fellow senior all-stater Amanda Mancini got the win in goal, making 12 key saves.

Foley survived a scare from No. 5 Ann Arbor Greenhills in their regional semifinal, winning 2-1. Dansville topped Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central 2-0 in their semifinal.

Up next for Bishop Foley is semifinal battle with No. 7 Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes/Clarkston Everest Academy. Lakes beat Memphis 2-0 in their regional final.

They will face off Wednesday, June 16, at Troy Athens.

Bishop Foley has been a state power for decades, but it has been seven years since their last state title.

Bishop Foley has reached the Division 4 state final each of the past two years, only to fall in heartbreakers. The Ventures lost 1-0 to Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic Central in 2009 and by the same score in 2008 to Kalamazoo Christian.

They won their last state title in 2003 in Division 3. They also won the D3 title in 2002 and 1998. They added Division 2 titles in 2001 and 1999. The Ventures won the Class B title in 1997, 1995, 1994, 1993, 1990, and 1988.

Portage Central girls soccer team all business in Division 1 regional final victory over Okemos

Kalamazoo Gazette -- Taylore Peterson charged out of the Portage Central soccer team's locker room on Friday night and stepped straight into a mud puddle.

"Oh man," she said, looking down disapprovingly at her soaked foot.

That was about the most emotion the Mustangs sophomore displayed all evening. The rest of the time, Peterson was stone-faced and all business while poking in two goals in P-Central's 4-2 regional championship victory over Okemos.

"I think it's pretty important, because you can't get your head out of the game and you have to stay in it," Peterson said of keeping emotions in check during the late postseason pressure-cooker.

The reigning Division 1 state champion and No. 1-ranked Mustangs are now just one game away from a return trip to the finals. Portage Central (25-0-2) will face Plymouth on Wednesday, again at Holt High School, for the state semifinals.

After defeating Okemos 3-1 during the regular season, the Mustangs dominated the first half on Friday after an early lull.

"We were just not ready," Mustangs coach Pat Norman said. "We were la-la. I don't know. How do you describe it? We kept pulling strings, but we didn't know who to put where."

Novi girls soccer edgesTroy for regional title

Oakland Press --The weather on Friday mimicked the fortunes of the Novi girls soccer team: Just like the day’s climate things went from gloomy and sticky to glorious and gorgeous in a matter of seconds.

With time running down, and her team having not gotten a shot off on net in close to 50 minutes, Wildcats’ sophomore Kelli Timar scored a goal with 14:33 left to play in the second half to send Novi to a dramatic 1-0 defeat of Troy in a Division 1 regional championship game played under beautiful conditions at Sterling Heights Stevenson on Friday evening.

The Wildcats advance into the state semifinals at Stevenson next Wednesday, when they’ll face the winner of this afternoon’s Rochester Adams-Grand Blanc regional final.

Timar’s goal, which saw the rising young talent of a midfielder break free on the left side of the goal and punch the ball perfectly into the right corner of the net, came off a perfectly placed pass from junior forward Nicki Caruso. The game-winning score was Timar’s fifth goal of the season and second in the state tournament.

“I saw an opening, and knew I had a chance to get the job done for the whole team,” she said. “Nicki gave me a great pass and I just slipped the ball in there. I’m proud of myself for taking advantage of the opportunity and helping my team come out of here with the win.”

Novi (19-2-2) completes a season sweep of the Colts, having beaten them 1-0 back in April. Troy closes out the year with a final record of 15-4-4, a win shy of reaching the state semifinals for the second consecutive year. Getting upended on Friday is extra-bitter for the Colts, considering they outshot Novi ,10-5, in the game and dictated tempo throughout.

Plymouth girls soccer gets first win over Canton

Detroit News -- Going into Thursday's Division 1 regional final, Plymouth's Zoe Foster had something no other player on the field had: a cast wrapped around a broken right wrist.

By the end, she also had something no other player had: the winning goal in overtime as Plymouth defeated Canton for the first time in program history, 1-0.

"She's played awesome," said Plymouth coach Jeff Neschich, noting it was Foster's second winning goal of the postseason.

Foster broke her wrist in a game two weeks ago against Hartland and hasn't missed any time.

"It doesn't affect me at all," the freshman said. "When I went down in the Hartland game I still played."

After nearly 92 minutes of scoreless action, three Plymouth players contributed to the winning score. First it was Katie Moss, who on a free kick sent the ball just short of Canton goalie Kayla Bridges. As Bridges tried to corral the ball, Morgan Kladunde poked it forward to Foster, who directed it into a wide open net.

Oakridge falls short in soccer regional final game against Suttons Bay

Muskegon Chronicle - Muskegon Oakridge's girls soccer team never could solve the attacking end of the field Friday.

Getting there wasn't a problem for the Eagles in their first-ever regional finals appearance, but getting the ball to the net definitely was troublesome.

Oakridge mustered just three shots on goal - none of which got past Suttons Bay keeper Brittany Milkowski - and lost 1-0 to the Norsemen in the Division 3 regional final at Manistee.

The Eagles had a fine 17-2-2 season in going farther than they've ever gone before in the tournament.

"We've got really good athletes and we possessed the ball well," Oakridge coach Jeff Lohman said. "Once we got to the final third of the field though we just couldn't connect and lost all of our creativity.

"Once you get to this level, you need to pass the ball a lot better if you're going to advance."

Suttons Bay (17-4-3) won its second regional title in three years and moves on to the state semifinals Wednesday hosted by Hope College against Hudsonville Unity Christian.

The Norsemen's offense didn't fare much better against the Eagles, but a quick counter attack goal with 2:46 to play before halftime was all they would need.

A bang-bang play along the sideline left in doubt which team would get the throw-in with three minutes to play.

It went in favor of Suttons Bay. Senior midfielder Brandey Albarado took the throw-in all the way to 10 yards from the goal and then sent a low cross through the goal box.
