Quiz bowl champs!

 

 

   Novi Detroit Catholic Central, Detroit Country Day and Utica Academy for International Studies earned Michigan High School Quiz Bowl State Championships on Saturday, April 16, at Michigan State University.

   The event is sponsored and run by the MSU Honors College. The two-day competition is double-elimination and is open to quiz teams who have won either a league championship or major tournament.

   Detroit Catholic Central beat Dexter 435-325 in the Class A championship final. The Shamrocks advanced to the final undefeated with wins over Dexter (455-385), Novi (850-225), Holland (475-250), and Taylor Truman (595-285).

   Catholic Central is coached by Christopher Gismondi, Ben Herman and Jason Jones. Team members include Robert Cernak, David Ciccarelli, Ryan Dillon, Bobby Dorigo-Jones, James Haubert, Brett Kusch, Matt Messana, Alex Morgan, Collin Parks, Brandon Roach, Connor Teevens, Kevin Wegienka, and Chris Wolfe.

   Since 2001, Catholic Central has won eight Class A championships and won the National Academic Quiz Tournament Michigan State Championship in March

   In Class B, Detroit Country Day needed two games to down DeWitt to repeat as champions in the double-elimination tournament. Country Day reached the final unbeaten with wins over St. Joseph (610-340), Haslett (565-385), Manistee (630-165), Ludington (455-165), and North Branch (775-210).

  DeWitt lost their opener against St. Joseph (470-340) and advanced to the championship through the elimination bracket. They stunned Country Day 480-475 in the championship opener to force a winner-take-all match for the title. Country Day responded with a resounding 550-195 win to earn the championship.

   Detroit Country Day is coached by Eugene Jurkiewicz and Brad McNellen. Team members include John Bernabei, Sidharth Chand, Hannah Cheryan, Siddhant Dogra, Grace Greiner, Sai Namuduri, and Chris Schulte.

  It was the Yellowjackets third straight Class B championship.

   Utica Academy for International Studies defeated Hillsdale Academy 355-320 to earn their first Class C/D championship. Utica Academy reached their final unbeaten with victories over Saginaw Michigan Lutheran (545-160), Hillsdale Academy (330-295), defending champion Kalamazoo Christian (400-315), Charlevoix (540-205), and Onekama (440-105).

  Utica Academy for International Studies is coached by William Dobbie. Team members include Nicola Fiorvento, Aaron Rea, Gordon Smilnak, Kyle St. Peter, Lucas Weingartz, and Troy Zuccaro.

   All three championship teams have the chance to compete in other nationwide quiz bowl competitions.
